Changing lives - one internship at a time.

I’d like to introduce you to Brooke who just graduated from a local high school earlier this year...

  • Brooke applied for a position in May at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Accepted as a Refuge Operations and Maintenance Intern – which basically means she got to try a little bit of everything.
  • Now she is planning a career in conservation!
  • Your help will allow students like Brooke to have a similar experience!

Meet Brooke.

My name is Brook Billock and I had an internship at the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge this summer! I gained a lot of experience and knowledge in my time at the refuge. I learned how to identify some birds, how to use a mower and weed eater, how to execute bird surveys, and so many other things that will help me later on down the road. Oh, and I got to drive an airboat which was awesome! Most importantly though, I learned how to be sufficiently independent and be confident in my work ethic. My favorite thing to do was definitely mowing; it was something I could do at my own pace and take my time with.

In the future I hope to get a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science and pursue a more environmental-based career. Without the Friends group, I wouldn’t have been able to have the opportunity to partake in the internship. Thank you!

I am writing you today to ask you to send a special year-end gift to support refuge priorities and student interns like Brooke. As we look ahead to next year with the uncertainty of the federal budget, refuge partners have requested that we keep funds as flexible as possible to allow us to react to maintenance and staffing needs as they arise.

We need your help to continue to provide interns, experiences in nature, and protect lands. You can invest in the future of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge by making a contribution to the Innovation Fund today.

The Innovation Fund is established to support projects that foster collaboration to help Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge reach unprecedented levels of excellence.

Your gift will work to support refuge priorities like maintaining public access points, restoring land, and providing people power and opportunities for youth in conservation through the newly established Career Pathways Program.

The Friends Board of Directors will meet in January 2023 to determine how funds will be distributed to support the refuge. We look forward to keeping you apprised of the impact of your contribution through our website, social media, and letter of thanks to you.

With your help we can increase the capability of Ohio’s only national wildlife refuge complex. Won’t you join us?
